Venice to Porec

Day 1 – Arrival in Venice (Dolo/Marghera)

Individual arrive at the hotel on the mainland (Dolo/Marghera) from where the tour will start. The city of Venice has a well organised and easily accessible public transport system.

Day 2 – Venice (Mestre) – Jesolo/Caorle 50/80km

This day you have two possibilities, either you cycle along the Liberty bridge and the lagoon to Venice or you cycle through the country following the river Sile to reach Jesolo or surroundings.

Step 1) In Venice you take a ferry across to Lido and one more ferry to Punta Sabbioni. On the endless beaches of Cavallino, a spit of land in the north of the lagoon, the route is lined by numerous fishing boats and souvenir stalls. On the way to Jesolo, you can stop for a while on the beach. Accomodation in Jesolo or in the surroundings.

Step 2) from Mestre to Portegrandi you cycle following route marked I-2/I-4 then along the river Sile. This natural finish river carries always a constant amount of water and flows quietly. Passing the ruins of Torre Caligo, near Caposile, you reach directly Jesolo.

Day 3 Caorle/Jesolo – Concordia Sagittaria/Portogruaro 30 – 50 km.

Along the coast and passed the last fishermen’s cottages, you reach Caorle a wonderful, small seaside resort with a historical centre. On reaching this destination, it signifies leaving the sea for a while as the direction is dictated by the mainland in the direction of the Julian Alps on the horizon. Following the route you reach Portogruaro, a very pleasant city with lots of Venetian style buildings and Concordia Saggitaria, with romanic ruins and an ancient basilica.

Day 4 Concordia Sagittaria/Portogruaro – Aquileia/Grado 85 km

Besides the beaches of the Adriatic, there is a lot to discover; ruins of former Roman cities, ancient churches and lonely landscapes on the edge of the lagoon. Following the route to Aquileia, once a large city of the Roman Empire. Excavations of the Roman city can be seen in the open-air-site and in the museum. The traditional seaside town of Grado is an old town on the lagoon island and is connected to an added part on the mainland.

Day 5 – Aquilea/Grado – Trieste 70km

Today’s stage continues through the hinterland of Trieste, before returning to the sea and a bike along the coastline of unique beauty. The coastal road follows through suggestive resorts like Duino, Sistiana and Miramare. You should take time to visit the romantic castle of Miramare above the Bay of Grignano situated in the middle of a beautiful park. Above the Gulf of Trieste, entrenched is a city bearing the same name, once a harbour metropolis of the Habsburgs Empire and where you will be spending the night. There is a possibility to shorten this stage of the route with the bicycle to secure more time for sightseeing using local trains

Day 6 Trieste – Piran/Portorož 35 km

Only after a few kilometres today, we take leave of Italy. In Slovenia, the route continues predominantly on cycle paths through well known seaside towns like Koper (Capodistria) and Izola (Isola d’Istria), to Piran (Pirano) or to Portorož (Portorose). Recommendable is a little bit longer alternative of this stage which passes along the valley “Rosandra” in the backcountry. You can also take a ferry from Trieste to Muggia then bike into Slovenian Parenzana trail.

Day 7 – Portorož/Piran – Poreč 70km

Cycling past the salt gardens of Secovlje (Sicciole) you cross over the border into Croatia. For a distance, the route goes through the Croatian part of Istria, the largest peninsula on the Adriatic with its slightly hilly terrain on the way to Porec, the most important coastal city on the west coast of Istria. It is certainly worth a visit to Euphrasian-Basilica which has been taken up by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Day 8 – Departure

If you wish to return to Venice then the final crowning of the tour is the optional return ferry boat to Venice. From the boat, you can sit back and review again the saddled distance covered as the boat continues on route to the lagoon city.  A boat leaves Poreč approx. 8 am and arrives at an estimated time of 10h30 in Venice, please check to verify timetables at www.venezialines.com. Transfer to airport or railway station is available on request.

When booking we need your name, date of birth, official document (Passport or Identity Document) document numbers and valid date. If the ferry to Venice is cancelled due to technical problems there will be a transfer by bus, the booked ferry ticket, however, cannot be refunded and it is not possible to claim compensation.

The price not include: trip to/from Venice; meals and drinks; museum fees; city tax if request; bike rental, ferry ticket from Porec to Venice with bicycle (available on request); extra and all things not marked on “the price include”.

How to reach Venice:

by car: highway A4, exit Marghera

by train: railway station of Venezia Mestre. See timetable at Trenitalia website. Only Regional Trains can carry on the bikes

by plane: major Airlines to airports in Venice, Verona and Bologna and low cost to Treviso.
